LED Wall Pixel Pitch Guide

Pixel pitch is the single most important factor in LED wall quality and cost. This guide explains what pixel pitch means, how it affects your viewing experience, and how to choose the right pitch for your project.

What Is Pixel Pitch?

Pixel pitch (also called dot pitch) is the distance from the center of one LED pixel to the center of the next pixel, measured in millimeters. It's written as "P" followed by a number — for example, P2.5 means each pixel is 2.5mm apart from the next.

Smaller Pixel Pitch = Higher Resolution

When pixels are closer together, you get more pixels per square inch. This means sharper images, finer detail, and the ability to sit closer to the display without seeing individual pixels.

Smaller Pitch = Higher Cost

Manufacturing LEDs with tighter spacing requires more precision and more LEDs per panel. A P1.5 wall can cost 2-3x more than a P3.9 wall of the same physical size.

Pitch Determines Optimal Viewing Distance

Each pixel pitch has an ideal viewing distance range. Sitting too close to a coarse-pitch wall, you'll see a "screen door" effect. Sitting too far from a fine-pitch wall, you can't appreciate the extra resolution.

Common Pixel Pitches & Their Best Uses

P0.9 - P1.2 (Ultra Fine Pitch)

Best viewing distance: 3-8 feet

Cost: $500 - $800+ per sq ft

Best for: Executive boardrooms, control rooms, luxury home theaters where viewers sit very close, broadcast studios

Resolution: Near-4K at moderate sizes. Can achieve true 4K at 130-160" diagonal.

P1.5 - P1.9 (Fine Pitch)

Best viewing distance: 5-12 feet

Cost: $300 - $500 per sq ft

Best for: Home theaters, conference rooms, corporate lobbies, retail flagship stores

Resolution: Excellent at typical room viewing distances. The sweet spot for most residential installations.

P2.5 - P2.9 (Standard Fine)

Best viewing distance: 8-16 feet

Cost: $150 - $300 per sq ft

Best for: Medium-sized rooms, churches, retail stores, restaurants, sports bars

Resolution: Very good for most applications. The most popular choice for commercial installations.

P3.9 - P4.8 (Standard)

Best viewing distance: 12-25 feet

Cost: $100 - $200 per sq ft

Best for: Large venues, houses of worship, auditoriums, rental/event walls

Resolution: Good for distance viewing. Not ideal for close-up viewing but excellent value for large spaces.

P6 - P10 (Coarse Pitch)

Best viewing distance: 20-50+ feet

Cost: $75 - $150 per sq ft

Best for: Outdoor billboards, stadium scoreboards, building facades, large outdoor advertising

Resolution: Designed for long-distance viewing. From 30+ feet away, the image looks sharp and clear.

How to Calculate Your Ideal Pixel Pitch

A simple formula to match pitch to your viewing distance

The Viewing Distance Rule

A good rule of thumb: optimal viewing distance (in feet) = pixel pitch (in mm) × 3-5

Examples:

• P1.9 pitch → optimal viewing at 6-10 feet

• P2.5 pitch → optimal viewing at 8-13 feet

• P3.9 pitch → optimal viewing at 12-20 feet

If your primary seating is 10 feet from the wall, P1.9 or P2.5 is ideal. If you're 20 feet away, P3.9 works perfectly and saves money.

The "Screen Door" Test

Pixel Pitch Recommendations by Room Type

Home Theater

Recommended: P1.5 - P1.9

Viewers typically sit 8-12 feet from the screen. Fine pitch delivers cinema-quality images without visible pixel structure.

Living Room / Media Room

Recommended: P1.9 - P2.5

Viewing distances vary more in multi-use rooms. P2.5 offers excellent quality at a more accessible price point.

Conference Room

Recommended: P1.2 - P1.9

Close viewing distances in conference rooms demand fine pitch. Text and data must be crystal clear for presentations.

Corporate Lobby

Recommended: P2.5 - P3.9

Viewers are typically 10+ feet away. P2.5-P3.9 delivers great visuals at a reasonable cost for large-format displays.

Restaurant / Bar

Recommended: P2.5 - P3.9

Patrons view from various distances. P3.9 is cost-effective for large walls while maintaining good image quality.

House of Worship

Recommended: P2.5 - P4.8

Depends on room size. Smaller chapels: P2.5. Large sanctuaries: P3.9-P4.8. The back row should still see clear images.

Outdoor Patio

Recommended: P3.9 - P6.0

Viewing distances are typically longer outdoors, and ambient light reduces perceived resolution. Coarser pitch saves money.

Stadium / Large Venue

Recommended: P6 - P10

Massive viewing distances make fine pitch unnecessary (and prohibitively expensive). Coarse pitch delivers great value at scale.

Fine Pitch vs Standard Pitch: Is the Upgrade Worth It?

The jump from P3.9 to P1.9 can double or triple your cost. Here's how to decide if it's worth it:

Upgrade When:

• Viewers sit within 10 feet of the display

• You'll display detailed content (text, data, graphics)

• The room is a premium space (executive suite, luxury home)

• You want future-proof resolution as content quality increases

Save Money When:

• Primary viewing is 15+ feet away

• Content is mostly video (less detail-critical than text)

• The wall is very large (fine pitch at scale gets expensive fast)

• Budget is a primary concern and standard pitch looks acceptable
